The Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) is a parastatal established by the Botswana Qualifications Authority Act, No 24 of 2013, to:
  • BQA provide for and maintain the National Credit and Qualifications Framework (NCQF)
  • BQA coordinate the education, training and skills development quality assurance system, from early childhood to tertiary level (lifelong learning).
The National Qualifications for Tourism Nature Guiding are registered on the NCQF (National Credit Qualification Framework) under BQA.

The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa

 The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) provides educational opportunities to promote the conservation and rehabilitation of the cultural and natural heritage of Southern Africa.

​To this end FGASA maintains and serves a professional association of highly-trained nature guides, tour operators and hospitality institutions who share the vision and are committed to the FGASA Code of Conduct and Responsible Tourism guidelines.

How to attain BQA qualifications with NGC
  1. Register with NGC for the specific course and qualification – pay the relevant qualification course, study packs and or qualification assessment fees to NGC
  2. NGTB then register the candidate with BQA respectively.
  3. Once candidates prove competent for all the unit standards making up a BQA Nature Guiding Qualification, NGC then sends the candidate’s results to BQA for credit reporting on the NQF.
The candidate is responsible for paying the folloiwng fees to BQA for:
  • Credit Reporting on the National Qualification Framework.
NGC cannot be held responsible for delays relating to BQA regarding credit reporting.
The BQA National Certificate in Tourism Nature Guiding IS NOT A GUIDE LICENSE.
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DNWP) is responsible for issuing the Relevant Guide License based on the Level and Strands in guiding listed on the National Certificate.

NGC is currently accredited to offer the following Nature Guide Qualification programs or parts thereof.

​(NQF 2) National Intermediate Certificate in Tourism Nature Guiding with Strands in:
  • Vehicle Guiding
  • Night Drive Guiding
  • Back-up Walking Guiding
  • Rifle Use as a Back-up Guide
  • Boat Guiding = Currently onsite only in Aquatic environments

(NQF 3) Part of the National Certificate in Tourism as a Strand in
  • Professional Lead Walking Guide
  • Dealing with potentially dangerous animals (PDA’s)
  • Rifle use as a Lead Guide
Future Qualifications – in development

  • Professional Mobile Nature Guide – Overnight Camping tours in vehicles
  • Professional Multiday Nature Guides – Lodge Based guides in more than one destination

FGASA aims to promote a culture of professional guiding based on a strong ethical well-informed, safety conscious approach that provides the visitor to Southern Africa with a pleasant and memorable experience.
FGASA is fully committed to the development and implementation of the National qualifications, promoting the development of all tourist guides including previously disadvantaged individuals as guides, trackers, trainers and assessors as part of the South African transformation process.
FGASA promotes the development of guides through the use of training programmes that conform to high standards of learner development. The Association promotes the highest standards of guide assessment appointing and registering fully qualified and experienced assessors.
The philosophy of FGASA is one of promoting a high standard of tourist guiding, skills development and job creation within the tourism industry.
FGASA is a CATHSSETA accredited training provider for tourism guiding in South Africa. The equivalent CATHSSETA qualifications can be attained through FGASA, thus allowing you to attain the required National Skills Program Certificates and Qualifications. FGASA is continually adding qualifications to their scope in terms of CATHSSETA accreditation. At present some of the national qualifications/skills programmes can be attained through FGASA. There are also number of other FGASA Certificates that are exclusive to FGASA.
NGTB is endorsed as Training provider for various FGASA Qualifications.
Should you wish to register with NGTB for a FGASA qualification, follow below procedure:
Register as South African, SADC or International Member – the fees differ
  1. Register with NGTB for the relevant course and qualification – book for the course.
  2. Register with FGASA as  member, pay the fees direct to FGASA
  3. Pay FGASA Annual Subscription Fees
  4. Purchase the relevant Study Packs direct from FGASA
  5. Register and Pay for relevant examination fees direct to FGASA
  6. Pay Moderation Fees directly to FGASA
Once you have completed training, exams and assessments required by FGASA on the NGTB course, NGTB send FGASA your achievement details. FGASA then process your qualification certificate and registration with CATHSSETA.
FGASA will then send you your relevant FGASA certificate as well as your CATHSSETA certificate.

Nature Guiding Company - fgasa/cathsseta qualifications

NGC is currently accredited to offer the following FGASA qualification programs. These are South African Based Guide Qualifications.
  1. FGASA Apprentic Field Guide  – 30 day pre-course self-study and 32 night Field Course = CATHSSETA NQF 2
  2. FGASA Advanced Field Guide  - Preparation and Assessment course = minimum of 5 days = CATHSETTA NQF 4
 
NON CATHSSETA QUALIFICATIONS
  1. FGASA Specialist Guide - Preparation and Assessment course  = minimum of 5 days
  2. Apprentice Trails Guide and Advanced Rifle Handling  - 28 night Field Course
  3. Professional Trails Guide  = Preparation and Assessment Course = minimum of 5 days = must meet FGASA Back-up Trail guide and be endorsed for Lead Trail Guide assessment by FGASA
